What should I do with my online existence?

Tags: Internet

As I mentioned in my last post, I am finally starting to see some light with social networking.  A little light anyway.  Now that I have some friends on Facebook, including my best friend from elementary school and one of my close teenage friends from Cape Cod summers, Facebook is making more sense to me.  I KNOW it's supposed to be for business networking too, but I really like the idea of (re-)connecting with far off friends instead.  I could post pictures of my family, fun stuff that we do, etc.  Except that I have some business contacts on there too.  Those contacts really don't need to see pictures of my kids or my airplane.  So how the heck am I supposed to be using this?  I'm still paying some attention to Twitter too, but still think that's a complete waste of time.  I wonder if I can make Facebook my personal space and concentrate on LinkedIn for more business oriented stuff, which is sort of the focus of those media anyway...?  I'm open to suggestions here.

Gravatar Image1 - Yeah, I really think Facebook is more geared for personal interactions a relationships. It can be for business contacts too, but only those that you'd want to have a beer with or hang out with outside of work.

LinkedIn is made specifically for professional relationship building and has tools to help you network and connect with work colleagues without giving away anything about your personal life.

I say use each social network for what it's made for. Twitter is made for people who have a following of fans or friends who care what they are up to 24-7. Not too practical for most regular people I think. I use it for my "musician" stuff, which I keep seperate from my "computer guy" stuff.

You are now my friend on both Facebook and LiinkedIn which I think is awesome, Facebook allows me to see the man behind the Techie...which is always a treat.Emoticon

Gravatar Image2 - I use facebook mostly for personal and LinkedIN for business.

But, if you want to use facebook for business, make use of the privacy settings to block business contacts from seeing photos or your wall.

Gravatar Image3 - Good idea, Pinny, but I've definitely decided to keep business contacts off of my Facebook account. In the last couple of weeks my Facebook fascination has slowed down dramatically and eventually will disappear completely I think.
